U.S.- U.N. Funding Issues
Congress returned from its summer recess on 5 September
facing important decisions on U.S. assessed contributions to
the United Nations regular budget and peacekeeping. On 24
September, President Bush is expected to address the U.N.
general assembly some nine months after member states agreed
to reduce U.S. assessments for the regular budget and
peacekeeping in return for the release of $582 million in
arrears. Finally, fiscal year 2002 begins on 1 October ñ a
key deadline by which U.N. funding levels must be determined
in order for the United States to meet all of its current
obligations by calendar year's end.
