Announcing the 10th United Nations Association Film Festival. UNAFF,
which is now completing its first decade, was originally conceived to celebrate
the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
It was created with the help of members of the Stanford Film Society and United Nations
Association Midpeninsula Chapter, a grassroots, community-based, nonprofit organization.
The 10th UNAFF will be held from October 24-28, 2007 at Stanford University.
The theme for this year is CAMERA AS WITNESS.

UNAFF celebrates the power of films and videos dealing with human rights, environmental survival, women’s issues, protection of refugees, homelessness, racism, disease control, universal education, war and peace. Documentaries often elicit a very personal, emotional response that encourages dialogue and action by humanizing global and local problems. To further this goal, UNAFF hosts academics and filmmakers from around the world to discuss the topics in the films with the audience, groups and individuals who are often separated by geography, ethnicity and economic constraints. Last year UNAFF jurors carefully reviewed over three hundred submissions.

Our final program consisted of thirty one films related to issues from Afghanistan, Albania, Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Colombia, China, Congo, Ethiopia, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Kenya, Mexico, Nepal, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Palestine, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Spain, the UK and the USA.

Ambassador Wachtmeister was personal assistant to Secretary General Hammerskjold when his plane crashed in Congo in 1961. In his memoirs, Wachtmeister describes his close work with he Secretary General (whom he was scheduled to accompany on the fateful flight). Although he was an unexpected choice as Secretary General of the United Nations in 1953, Hammerskjold became an innovative peacemaker who "carved out a position in world politics subsequently achieved by no other Secretary General and by no other Swede," according to Peter Wallensteen, the Dag Hammerskjold professor of Peace and Conflict Resolution at Uppsala University. Recognized for his efforts, Hammerskjold was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1961.

Who, then, was Secretary General Hammarskjold? What made him unique? Did he have creative qualities, or was he shaped by the global political conditions that prevailed in his day?

Please join the World Affairs Council as Ambassador Wachtmeister journeys to America to commemorate the 40th anniversary death of Dag Hammarskjold.
