Funding

The United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-SF) is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation and a nonprofit organization with 501(c)(3) federal tax-exempt status.

Funding for UNA-SF's activities comes from grants, donations, UNA-USA membership dues, and ticket sales.

The United Nations Association of San Francisco (UNA-SF) is the San Francisco chapter of the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA, unausa.org), a national, nonpartisan, and nonprofit organization. UNA-USA is a center for innovative programs to engage Americans in issues of global concern, from education and HIV/AIDS to peace, security, and international law. Its educational and humanitarian campaigns, including teaching students in urban schools, clearing minefields, and providing school-based support for children living in HIV/ AIDS-affected communities in Africa, allow people to make a global impact at the local level. UNA-USA encourages United States leadership in the United Nations and is a part of the World Federation of United Nations Associations.

UNA-USA recently entered into a Special Alliance with the United Nations Foundation and has more than 175 chapters and divisions across the country with nearly 20,000 members. These members carry out programs and campaigns at the local level through events, educational promotions and fundraising. The Association also has a Student Alliance—a nationwide network of students, from elementary school to college, that makes students’ opinions regarding global challenges heard amongst their peers, within their communities, across the nation, and around the world— and a young professionals network called Young Professionals for International Cooperation (YPIC) with more than 1,500 members. For membership information see unausa.org.

Ways to Contribute

December 28, 2011

To our UNA San Francisco long time members:

I hope this end of the year finds you well and ready to receive 2012. My name is Pablo Castro, and I am honored to be the current president of UNA USA SF.

I wanted to tell you that we are still here, better than ever and ready to begin another year, and this time much more optimistic. Since our last annual general meeting, we made progress in several areas, such as increasing membership, volunteers and organizing our chapter so we are able to better comply with UNA mission.

During this past 7 months we had five volunteer's events, including a forum where we asked them to voice their concerns and interests. We also took part on the 2011 Aids Walk at our Golden Gate Park and the "Girls Up" movement a program of our United Nations Foundation. Contributions were made for "Girls Up" and "Nothing but Nets". We had an exciting UN Day celebration on October 23rd and we sponsored the International UNA Film Festival. In between tasks and meetings, we were invited to speak about UNA SF at SFSU, City College and Notre Dame de Namur University. All these activities have increased our membership and the amount of volunteers is close to 175; we have not seeing this for a long time.

The New Year is here already and we intend to keep making a difference. The plans are optimistic but real. We have organized our volunteers in various groups and focus on different goals, such us Advocacy, Women's Rights, Model UN education, Social Media, International Communications, UNA Art Group, etc. We have a good team in our hands and we are ready to go.

As a member, you should also have an input on our activities; please let us hear from you. We would love to have a note or an email from you with your thoughts. We could also use your financial contributions in UNA SF to support the projects, materials and fees that we sometimes encounter as a growing organization with a wonderful vision for the world. Please donate to UNA SF; it will go to enhance our mission of education and advocacy for world issues and support for the UN. To donate through PayPal: http://www.una-sf.org.

Have a great New Year and may your life and love ones be prosperous.

General Support
Most of the work of running UNA-SF is done by unpaid board members, with minimal clerical assistance through temporary employment agencies, and occasional volunteers. Funding to cover improved administrative support would greatly improve UNA-SF's operations and public programs.

UNA-SF projects for which public support is needed include:

Education: the annual UNA-USA National High School Essay Contest is sponsored by UNA-USA and UNA-SF. It is funded in part by grants and donations.

Public programs:  UNA-SF sponsors or co-sponsors numerous public events each year.  See Events and the UNA-SF Courier for information about current and past programs.

UN anniversary events: Charter Day and UN Day (in June and October every year) and other less frequent UN founding anniversary celebrations (recently, in 1995 and 2005).

The UNA-SF Courier, our newsletter, in print and online, is usually published twice a year. It is sent to UNA-SF members
.
