UN60


The United Nations was founded in San Francisco with the signing of the UN's Charter on June 26, 1945. The sixtieth anniversary of the UN will be celebrated in many public programs throughout the Bay Area between March and October 2005, and particularly in five days of World Environment Day activities--June 1 through 5--and two days of official programs, June 25 and 26, 2005.

Distinguished speakers address the UN Millennium Development Goals and how they relate to the future of the world.

UN60: Official VIP Reception with dignitaries and San Francisco Consular Corps

VIP Reception with Mayor Gavin Newsom for UN60 dignitaries. Honored guests will include program participants, Bay Area, state, and federal government officials, and members of the San Francisco Consular Corps. Tickets are $125 and include hosted bar, hors d'oeuvres, entertainment and a 1945 archival photographic exhibition on the founding of the United Nations, courtesy of the San Francisco Fine Arts Museums.

Keynote address by David J. O'Reilly, Chairman and CEO, Chevron Corp. A panel of world leaders will discuss The UN at 60-Threats, Challenges, and Changes.

*The Honorable Ambassador Richard N. Haass, Director of Policy Planning for the US Dept. of State; Former VP and Dir. of Foreign Policy, Brookings Institution. Senior Fellow of the Council on Foreign Relations. Senior Associate Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

*H.E. Ambassador Stephane Hessel - Recipient of the Four Freedoms Award. Ambassador from France to posts in Africa. A permanent representative of France to the UN in Geneva from 1977 to 1981. Leader of the French Delegation to the Human Rights Commission and the World Conference on Human Rights in 1993. Vice-President of the International Collegium.

Special Award will be presented to A.W. (Tom) Clausen, former President of the World Bank and Retired Chairman and CEO, Bank of America
